Understand the Root.
Heal the Wound.
Change What Gets Carried Forward.

Bringing clarity to the complexities of trauma, relationships, and identity, helping people make sense of what shaped them and create a more intentional path forward.

Understanding where our patterns began can change where our stories go next.

I’m Taran McGowen, a counselor, researcher, educator, and speaker specializing in intergenerational trauma, identity, and relational healing.

I help individuals, couples, and families uncover the roots of the patterns shaping their lives, heal what has been carried across generations, and build healthier relationships, stronger identities, and a clearer sense of purpose.

You Don’t Have to Keep Carrying What Was Handed to You.

Sometimes the problem isn’t where we think it is.

We can spend years trying to change the things we see on the surface — the relationships we choose, the boundaries we struggle to hold, the ways we respond to conflict, the expectations we place on ourselves, or the parts of ourselves we have learned to hide.

But lasting change often requires us to look deeper.

Our families and experiences teach us what love looks like. What safety feels like. How conflict is handled. Whether our needs matter. What we're worth. Who we're allowed to become.

And sometimes, the patterns we're trying so hard to change didn't begin with us.

My work is about getting to the root.

Understanding what shaped us. Healing what wounded us. Rebuilding what was lost. And becoming intentional about what we carry forward.

About Taran

Hi, I’m Taran.

For much of my career as a counselor, I've worked with people who desperately wanted something in their lives to change.

Different relationship. Different reaction. Different boundary. Different belief about themselves.

But eventually, I became increasingly interested in a different question:

Why did this pattern develop in the first place?

That question has shaped my work as a clinician and researcher and led me deeper into the study of intergenerational trauma — how our families, relationships, environments, culture, experiences, and histories shape who we become.

Today, my work lives at the intersection of trauma, relationships, identity, and purpose.

Whether I'm sitting with a couple doing intensive therapeutic work or speaking to hundreds of people, my goal is the same: help people understand what's underneath the patterns they see so they can make intentional decisions about what comes next.

Exploring what shapes us & how we heal

Thoughts and conversations about intergenerational trauma, relationships, identity, faith, family, healing, and purpose.

What we inherit can shape us.
It doesn’t have to define what comes next.

Whether you’re ready to do deeper healing work or looking for a speaker to bring this conversation to your community, I’d love to connect.
